Google Business Profile for restaurant catering

When an office manager searches for catering near them, Google Maps and the local results are often the first thing they see. Your Google Business Profile is free, and it is one of the few places where your catering offer can show up next to the buyer's search without paying for it.

This guide covers the settings that matter for catering. Google's own guide for restaurants is the reference (Google Business Profile Help).

How local ranking works

Google says local results are based on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance and prominence (how well known the business is, including reviews and links) (Google Business Profile Help). You cannot change distance. You can make your profile clearly relevant to catering and build prominence over time.

Step 1: Categories

Your primary category should stay what you are, for example "Mexican restaurant". If catering is a regular, bookable service, add "Caterer" as an additional category. Do not switch your primary category to chase catering searches. Google asks you to choose categories that describe the business as a whole, and your restaurant searches depend on the primary one.

Step 2: Services, attributes and description

  • Add catering to your services list with a short description.
  • Fill in relevant attributes: delivery, takeout, dietary options and others offered for restaurants.
  • Mention catering in your business description in plain words: "We cater office lunches, meetings and private events for 10 to 100 guests in [area]."

Step 3: Menu and links

Google lets restaurants manage menu content in the menu editor, set a menu link, and choose a preferred online ordering provider (Google). For catering: - Make sure your menu link points to a page that includes catering packages, or add catering items in the menu editor with prices. - Use your website link or a catering-specific link where the profile allows it, so catering buyers land on your catering page, not your dinner menu. - Remove or deprioritize third-party ordering links you do not want buyers to use.

Step 4: Photos

Upload photos of catering itself: trays set out, boxed lunches, a buffet at an office, a private event setup. Most profiles only show plated dishes and the dining room. A buyer looking for catering wants to see what arrives.

Step 5: Posts

Use Business Profile posts for catering offers and seasonal pushes, such as holiday party packages from early November (holiday party playbook). Keep each post specific: occasion, what is included, how to order.

Step 6: Reviews

Ask catering customers for reviews after delivery. A review that mentions "catered our team lunch, on time, labeled vegetarian options" tells the next office manager exactly what they want to know. Reply to every review, positive or negative.

Step 7: Measure

Google's Business Profile performance view shows searches used to find you, menu clicks and bookings, among other metrics. Track catering inquiries separately, and ask every new catering customer how they found you.

What Business Profile will not do alone

A profile helps people who are already searching find you. Most catering buyers are not searching at the exact moment you want them to. Outreach, a strong catering menu and paid channels reach people before they search. The full plan is in how to get catering orders.

Common questions

Should I add "Caterer" as a category on my restaurant's profile?

If catering is a regular service you can deliver on, adding it as an additional category is reasonable. Keep your restaurant category as primary.

Can I put my catering menu on Google?

Yes. Use the menu editor for catering items or link a menu page that includes catering packages.

How do I get my restaurant to show up for catering near me?

Make catering clearly visible on your profile (category, services, description, photos, menu), keep information accurate and build reviews that mention catering.

Do Google Business Profile posts help?

They keep the profile current and let you promote seasonal offers. Treat them as a free channel for catering announcements.
